Reflections: Stress

by Steve Marshall

The spiritual master Osho, although considered a little eccentric by some people, was actually very far advanced in many of the methods that he advocated. They look and sound a bit weird, but they actually will all work for you.

Here are some very easy ways that Osho advocated to relieve tension and stress within your life. His focus was on the spiritual side, but these exercises also affect the physical side of you as well. All parts of you are linked together, and if you relieve the stress within one area, the benefits will then flow into all areas of your life.

Easy Way One:

This is so deceptively simple, and you will feel like an idiot when doing it, but just try it, and relax. The technique is to simply speak gibberish, or nonsense words and phrases, making them all up as you go, in a fast paced and free flowing way. It is more effective when the words are spoken out aloud of course, but you can mouth them more quietly to yourself, if you want to.

Easy Way Two:

This is also quite similar to the first exercise.

This is an unusual relaxation method of tongue shaking. All that you do is to move your tongue rapidly in and out, side to side and up and down, both with the mouth closed or open, and making the movements as erratic, or uncontrolled as is possible. This calms the mind from thinking, as thinking is linked to speech physically via the tongue. Before meditation this relaxes the whole head and face, cheeks and even the ears and the jaw in particular, all are included.

Meditate for a few minutes after doing this exercise then on the silence of nothing, by chanting the words, "no thing is nothing."

This exercise of wobbling your tongue apparently comes from an ancient Atlantean practice of moving their tongue in such a way. They would be making a wobbling movement of their tongue while creating a small humming noise at the same time. To hum and wobble your tongue at the same time requires you to hum from your throat centre, and below. You can hum even from deep down towards your stomach area. The humming cannot not be done in your mouth, from your lips, if you are wobbling your tongue at the same time.

Next try laughing loudly at the same time as you tongue wobble, and see the benefits of releasing tension through the release of your held non laughter. Holding back laughter or happiness in any way in your life, always produces tension and stress. Laughter of course is a great stress reliever of itself in its own way.

Then contemplate or meditate on nonsense phrases such as, "do no thing to do nothing within everything." These meaningless words are a bind for the mind. The mind is now toggling into a boggle that will occupy your mind until it becomes now too tired to prevent your soul from getting its own message through to you at last.

This causes a certain directional firing of your mind away from itself, that then allows for the real connection of soul to come through, bypassing now the lost mind completely. This too is the value of a Koan, or a Zen teaching story. The mind is so distracted trying to solve an unsolvable problem, that enlightenment slips through the cracks so created. The larger the crack, the quicker that the enlightenment can take place.

Easy Way Three:

This is also very good and easy to do, as were all of Osho's methods. All you do is to allow your both hands to dance to each other. You move them together or apart in a dancing movement, opening and closing them rhythmically, and letting the movement lead your hands. Keep doing this for five to ten minutes, sometimes slowly, and sometimes speeding up a fraction. The idea is to abandon yourself to the movement, without your mind taking part in it at all.

Easy Way Four:

Carrying on from method number three, here you shake your whole body gently while standing with your legs shoulder width apart. Allow the rhythm of the shaking to move through you of itself, and all parts of you do not have to shake at the same time. Let the energy coursing naturally through you allow you to shake or to move the part that needs to be moved the most, or the part in you that is holding the most stress.

The best method to relieve anxiety is to realise that anxiety stems from expectation. Stop expecting anything by establishing a method of thinking that is based only on acceptance of what is.

Go and sit down comfortably whenever you feel stress or anxiety arising or building within you. Take a few deep breaths, close your eyes and start relaxing the mind by establishing a pattern of responsiveness for it to follow. Deep breathing of itself also helps to revitalise your body, and so pushes out stress even as it does so.

Go into meditation now with a thought such as aum or hu or even zuk, which will penetrate past the minds descriptive need to assign meaning to all things. While your mind is occupied and now that it is caught up in non meaning, allow your real self to slip through, and as your consciousness becomes an untimed stream of itself flowing quietly in you now, all stress will quietly also leave you.

These foreign sounding words do have meaning of course, but their sounds will vibrate in you and the concentration on the need for meaning will lesson, as you now feel the pleasantness of the vibrations instead. This distracts the mind, as feelings of pleasure always do.

Stress cannot exist within increased flows of consciousness, because higher consciousness is always linked to the more blissful state of peacefulness, happiness and of course to love itself. Unconditional love is the answer to all stress. Love totally and you can not hold stress from any level at all. There is no room for negativity or stress within total loving.
