a considerably different angle and tone than a comical children's book or a lively poem.
REAL WRITER RULE #5: SHOW; DON'T TELL.
The best writing demonstrates its content, rather than offering long lists of information. Rosters quickly grow stale, while dialogue, anecdotes and action grip readers.
REAL WRITER RULE #6: PAINT A PICTURE.
Descriptions are the writer's paintbrush, as he or she creates a scene. Even non-fiction writers use vivid and vital details to tell their stories.
REAL WRITER RULE #7: WHITTLE IT DOWN.
Most beginning writers, in their zest for creating copy, venture into the ominous abyss of wordiness.
Certainly, writers must begin by simply putting the words on the page. It is far easier to trim down lengthy content than to beef up weaker copy. Still, trim, we must.
Skilled writers become editors, once they have completed the first draft. After all, if a concept can be said in 100 words, why use 200? Economy is important, if writers wish to hold readers' interest. Why not use the extra 200 words to say something new and exciting?
REAL WRITER RULE #8: CHECK AND RECHECK.
Proofreading for perfection is the hallmark of a capable writer. In fact, most professional writers enlist a trusted set of eyes to check their work.
As readers, writers often find that their brains can be tricky, as writers will read what they intended to write. Sometimes, typographical errors may elude the actual composer.
REAL WRITER RULE #9:
READ IT ALOUD.
Rhythm and flow are essential components of the best writing. Real writers often read their work aloud. Truly, there is no better way to get a feel for the content. Circuitious, tongue-typing phrases can only be identified this way.
Reading aloud is not just for poetry and children's books. It's a basic practice for professional writers.
REAL WRITER RULE #10: PRACTICE YOUR CRAFT.
What is the best way to become a skilled writer? The most wondrous wordsmiths have only become such by practicing their writing craft, year after year.
Real writers grab any opportunity to write on any topic. Words and ideas awaken real writers in the darkest hours of the night. Passionate wordsmiths respond by writing.
