Christmas Eve with all of its anticipation, last minute details and whispered secrets is a magical time for both young and old. Traditions grow from warmly remembered Christmas Eves of our childhood and blossom anew each year, encompassing all new friends and family members.
Finger foods and eggnog served buffet style always worked well for open house and a steaming bowl of goulash with crusty Italian bread and iced cranberry tea was served for a quiet Christmas Eve at home. Whichever you choose, sweet memories, good company and good food are the order of the day.
Christmas Eggnog
Beat 6 eggs and pour into a saucepan with 2 cups milk, 1 cup sugar and 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla flavoring. Stir until the mixture is a little thickened. Chill completely. Whip 2 cups whipping or heavy cream until soft peaks form, pour into the chilled egg mixture, and blend well. Add a little milk if you like it thinner and sprinkle the top with nutmeg. One cup brandy or rum can also be added.
Lots of Dips And Chips
*Spicy Bean Dip with Tortilla Chips Who can resist a dip of refried beans, salsa, sharp cheddar cheese and sour cream? Sprinkle with chopped cilantro and place a huge bowl of tortilla chips next to it.
*Hummus Hummus, made with garlic, garbanzo beans, fresh cilantro and tahini paste is one very tasty dip served with crackers of any kind.
*Guacamole Creamy guacamole brings a dash of green to the buffet and the spiced up taste of avocados.
*Spinach Dip Spinach dip made with Knorr soup mix and sour cream and served in a bread bowl with bread cubes was hard to resist as we told ourselves it was spinach so it had to be healthy.
*Fresh Salsa Freshly chopped tomatoes, peppers, onions and cilantro makes a festive red and green addition to the buffet.
Baklava
Delicate flaky phyllo dough with butter and chopped almonds soaked in a light lemon syrup. These are melt in your mouth good and not hard to make.
Christmas Goodies
Fill platters with your favorite Christmas goodies like gingerbread men, stain glass sugar cookies, stuffed dates, truffles, pecan fudge, walnut brownies and white chocolate macadamia nut cookies.
Flaming Hot Wings
Who doesn't love hot wings! Fry up a big batch in the deep fryer and keep warm in the oven until time to serve. Place a bowl with Ranch dressing next to them on the table and provide a ladle to serve with.
BBQ Meatballs
Fry the meatballs in the morning and place in a crock pot with your favorite BBQ sauce. Let them simmer on the lowest setting all day long. Place the
