Christmas Eve is just around the corner and you offered your house for the celebrations but you have no idea what to serve for dinner on Christmas Eve. Keep in mind that different cultures have different traditions when it comes to Christmas Eve dinners. A common theme is to celebrate together but often that is where the commonality ends.
Traditions is some Catholic cultures dictate that Christmas Eve is a day of fasting and the family gathers together to break the fast over dinner when the first star appears in the night sky. This meal would not include meat, fish, or oil. This is in sharp contrast to some regions in Germany where the main dish is stuffed duck or goose.
If you want to experience cultural diversity, create a specific cultural theme for Christmas Eve Dinner. Perhaps a French Reveillon will be to your liking. In France, a traditional Christmas Eve dinner called a reveillon is this huge meal is luxurious and often lasts until after midnight. Appetizers would consist of lobster, escargots, and oysters. Then they are followed by 11other courses. Too much work? Maybe a traditional Thanksgiving type turkey dinner is better. Wait, want the Italian influence, then you better see the fishmonger, because tradition there is Seven Fishes. Want just one meat? Try roasting a pig like the traditional meal in Puerto Rico. Too exciting? Then try a traditional roast turkey with brussels sprouts and fake an English accent.
If you decide on a cultural theme, just head to the internet to find great recipes. Choosing a culture can be fun and educational for the entire family. Not thrilled with any of the options listed above, then take this advice. Make the day about family, about coming together, visiting, and creating memories. The night does not have to center around a big meal. Should you choose this option, put out finger-food. A nice platter of meats and cheeses to make sandwiches with, a vegetable tray and cookies for dessert will provide nourishment with little mess.
In the end, if you are responsible for serving Christmas Eve dinner, serve what you are comfortable with making and cleaning up after. You may want to take into consideration the cultural backgrounds of your guests or maybe you want them to experience your cultural heritage. If you need to have help make Christmas Eve dinner a potluck of Irish food. Have fun and be creative and make whatever you want.
