Bride tips: How to choose someone to walk you down the aisle who's not your father

Who will walk you down the aisle? For most women, a wedding day is something dreamed about from as early as Kindergarten. Your heart explodes with love as you dream of that magical day. When the actual day draws near there are so many decisions to be made. Of all the decisions to be made one of the most personal is "Who will walk me down the aisle to my one true love?"

Once upon a time, if your father could not walk you down the aisle, your next choice had to be your older brother or other older male family member. Luckily, today society has become more accepting of less traditonal celebrations. Even embracing them. Only one thing should guide this decision...Love. On a day as full of love as a wedding, how could anything else guide your decision making.

I was 18 when my father died in 1983. Shortly after, my mother asked me how I as feeling. My response was that I was thinking about who was going to walk me down the aisle. I was not even in a serious relationship at the time, but weddings are a young girls dream. I told Mom I wanted someone special to walk me down the aisle. I did not want to be forced to go with tradition. I told my Mom I wanted her to walk me down the aisle. She deserved that honor.

Indeed, four years later my mother walked me down the aisle, arm in arm. Both of us shaking at the significance of the moment. We knew that Dad was with us. Years later, when my mother remarried, she too picked a non-traditional escort. My four brothers all walked her down the aisle. Mom was arm in arm with my two oldest brothers at the back of the church. The three of them walked halfway down the aisle. There at the church mid point, my other two brothers joined my mother, replacing the first two and walked Mom to the alter. All involved loved the specialness of that moment. I am to be married again, to the greatest man that ever walked the face of the earth. In choosing the one who will walk me down the aisle I will again use love as my guide. It's a secret, but it will be non-traditional and special.

Use love as your guide as you pick who will walk you down the aisle on your wedding day. Ask yourself, who deserves that honor? Who would you most like to share that moment with? Should you walk down alone? Should you and your fiance walk down the aisle together? Your choices are as varied as your life has been. Let your heart be your guide and your day be perfectly memorable; everything you have dreamed about!
