Drama: Christmas morning

by Sadie Grey

Created on: December 09, 2008

Scene: Christmas morning in the Massey home. Daniel and Michelle have just opened their Christmas gifts to one another and are enjoying coffee and breakfast together. They hear laughter coming from outside.)

Characters:

Michelle and Daniel Massey

Evelyn McCall (Across the street neighbor who recently lost her husband)

Jimmy McCall (Evelyn's oldest son)

Elliott McCall

Duncan McCall (Evelyn's youngest)

Edith Smalley

Ted Smalley (Edith's son)

Michelle: I'll bet that's the McCall boys. (Smiling)

Danny: (Getting up and looking out the window.) Bingo! Just Jimmy and Duncan though. (He turns and looks at his wife.) Babe, I feel so alive today. I feel blessed.

Michelle: We are blessed honey and we are alive thanks to the kindness of a stranger.

Danny: Yeah, I know. I still can't believe he saved us then was killed.

Michelle: If the weather holds next week, let's make that trip back to St. Mary's. I want to pay our respects to his wife.

Danny: Absolutely. (He sits down and takes Michelle's hand.) I love you, more than anything in this world.

Michelle: I love you too.

Danny: (Touching the bracelet on her wrist.) Like it?

Michelle: Love it, but it seems so unimportant now. You know?

Danny: Yeah, I know. I feel like we're forgetting something. I thought at first I forgot one of your gifts but I didn't. Then I thought it was because we're home instead at the folks. That might have something to do with it but that's not really it either.

Michelle: I know. We didn't make it to Mom and Dad's because of what happened. Your folks are too far away. What is it?

Danny: I don't know, but I will think of it eventually.

Michelle: I don't think its something we forgot. I think its something we're missing.

(The boys can be heard laughing from outside)

Danny: Maybe it has to do with Frank Smalley Babe. He saved our lives. Maybe we're still in shock. In that, I mean, we were so prepared to thank him and give him anything only to find out he was killed after saving us. Is that shock?

Michelle: I don't know honey, but that might be it. I feel that I need to do something; I just don't know what it is.

Danny: (Taking her hand and folding his over hers) Pray with me Babe.

(Michelle and Danny close their eyes and bow their heads)

Danny: Heavenly Father, Michelle and I are at odds right now. We are happy and sad at the same time. A man, a good man, helped us; saved us and now he is dead. We aren't responsible, yet maybe we feel responsible. Show us what to do Father. Show us how to make this right. In Jesus' name, amen.
