Defining racism

by Daniel Creil

Created on: December 09, 2008

"Don't compare me with yourself: I belong to the race that have ruled in the world for many centuries!" would racist say.

Racism starts when a group of people start strongly to believe that other races or other (specific) race is less talented and powerful, and in many ways weaker then theirs. People who have common beliefs against some race are racists. Racists find many reasons why they should not accept, why they should avoid or discriminate other race.

Race is more like a physical characteristic that describes the region of person's birth. Accordingly to the part of planet Earth where the person comes from, he will have physical appearance that most of the people from that region have. People who live more in the Northern part of the world will have lighter color of skin than those who live closer to Equator. People from the environment where the sea is close will differ with their physical appearance from those who live in the mountains or in the environment where earth's altitude is higher.

Racism is what makes one group of people to avoid and not to accept people from other group just because the other group of people belongs to a specific race that is unacceptable or disrespected to the first group of people.

Sometimes racists do not have an explanation for their actions or dislikes, but still they stay aware from people who belong to other races. In this case we can find similarities with xenophobia, but instead of having a fear of people who come from other countries, racists have fear of people who belong to different race. When they see a person of other race walking down the street of his home city, he feels nervous and uncomfortable. This person might be a second or even the third generation that live in this city or in that particular country, but for a racist (phobic one) this is not enough good explanation. Because deep inside he feels that this person belongs to other part of the world, that this is not his natural environment to live in, that his ancestors were living in other country or even in other continent.

Nowadays racism is a reason why specific persons from one race discriminate people from other races in their daily activities. Street fighting, insulting comments, denied access to employment- these are some of the results that racism has brought in our lives.

Many discussions are made because we can not prove that in the nature exists such rule that proves that one race is always superior then the other one. Although nature has made us different, and we differ according from the region where our ancestors have live in, does this difference make one race stronger and more able physically and mentally then the other race?

Nowadays it is a question of our emotional intelligence, if we can accept the differences or not. Racism is just another appearance of the differences in opinions and beliefs, and racism believes that the differences that exist in nature are out there for a reason. We can accept people from different races and accept this difference that nature has made to us, as well as we should accept the difference in opinions.
