Autumn is the time of year when the colors turn to delicate gold, fiery red, buttery yellow, earthly brown and bold orange. The weather begins to cool down so the sultry summer temperatures are no longer present and the cold winter chill and dampness has yet to set in. This is a wonderful time for a wedding!
The Bride and Bridesmaids
Since the weather can be unpredictable, it is best if the bride does her research. See what the weather patterns are for the locale you have chosen and what the average temperature is during that time of year. It is best to be prepared so you can look as radiant as the colors of the season. Closed toe shoes are a must for all ladies attending the wedding.
Materials for your gown can be light wool or silk. You can consider longer sleeves and longer skirts but will still be able to pull off thin strapped or strapless tops. Just remember to add a wrap or shawl. Some gowns can come with a light jacket made of the same material as the dress especially if you have your gown custom made. Just remember you can always take off or put on the extra layers if the weather conditions dictate the need.
The gown does not have to be stark white but can reflect the more golden colors of the season. A champagne, ivory or light gold material is a nice alternative. Some brides add a splash of color with ribbons or sashes in the reds, oranges, fuchsias and browns of the season.
Bridesmaids' gowns can reflect the style of the bride's dress. If the bride has long sleeves, then the maids can have a similar style. The choice of colors is abundant and the bride may choose from any that reflect the season.
The Groom and Groomsmen
Tuxedos can reflect the autumn colors the bride has chosen in the cummerbunds, vests, handkerchiefs, ties and shirts. Another way to incorporate fall colors in the men's' outfits is to use a dark chocolate tuxedo with a cummerbund or vest matching the colors of the bridesmaids gowns. Tails are especially dapper and stylish for an autumn wedding and will help to distinguish the groom from the rest of his men.
Mothers of the Bride and Groom
The mothers of the bride and groom need to select their attire to project an air of elegance and sophistication. Their outfits should complement the bride's colors although they do not need to match exactly. If the bride has chosen her colors to be red and yellow, the mothers may choose to balance the colors with tan and beige. Their dresses must not be too short or revealing and emphasize the respect they are due as the mothers of the wedding couple.
The Guests
Just as the bride is taking into the consideration the cooler temperatures of a fall wedding, so should the guests. Often times beautiful outfits are ruined by the addition of everyday sweaters and outdoor coats. The key to a great fall wedding outfit is finding matching warm outer wear.
For the ladies, a dress with a matching jacket or suit is a perfect outfit. If the temperature gets too warm, the jacket can always be removed, showcasing the dress or blouse underneath. Sheath dresses with matching jackets fit this idea very well. The colors of the dress or skirt can be in any fall color but not be too short or revealing.
Another idea for warmth is a shrug. This little cover will keep your arms and back warm but won't conceal the beautiful dress you have chosen to wear.
For the gentlemen, a dark suit or sport coat and slacks are appropriate for a fall wedding. Colors in dark brown, blue and burgundy will reflect the colors of the season very well.
