A Sea Breeze cocktail contains vodka, cranberry juice and grapefruit juice. The combination of fruit juices and the drink's fruity appearance make this a cocktail which is mostly consumed during the Summer months. A foamy surface may be achieved by drink and it is considered an IBA Official Cocktail.
A Sea Breeze follows the classic principle of balancing strong with weak and sweet and sour.
Pineapple juice may be used in place of the grapefruit juice to make a Bay Breeze or an Hawaiian Sea Breeze.
This cocktail was invented in the late 1920s. The recipe was however different from the one used today. In the original Sea Breeze gin and grenadine were used.
Sea Breeze cocktails have featured in many TV series and films.
In Angel, the character of Lorne is rather partial to Sea Breezes. The miniature figure of the character is even accessorised with a miniature glass of the cocktail.
In the 1995 film French Kiss, Kate, played by Meg Ryan orders a Sea Breeze on the beach in Cannes as she confronts her ex-fianc and his new woman.
Ingredients:
4cl (one part) vodka
12cl (3 parts) cranberry juice
3cl (one part) grapefruit juice
Method:
Add all ingredients to a highball glass filled with ice.
Garnish with a lime wedge.
