"Do you think we should go to that speed dating thing Janie was talking about?" I couldn't believe my ears. "Karen, please tell me you're joking."
My friend Karen was a sucker for love. She wanted to feel it, taste it, touch it, smell it. She wanted it all! She wanted it so bad that she didn't ever stop talking about it and she definitely NEVER stopped searching for it. I, on the other hand, was a bit of a pessimist when it came to the whole "finding the perfect person" scenario. I was thirty-six and so were many of my friends. If love didn't happen for us back in our twenties, then what the hell were we doing wasting our time trying to find it in our thirties?
"Samantha! Janie and Alex met through speed dating and..."
I knew where this conversation was heading. "Yes, Karen. I know. They're getting married and it's going to be a spring wedding. You fail to remember that they've only known each other for five months and he's been divorced...twice!"
"That was just a little bump in the road, Samantha. You have to kiss a few frogs in order to find your prince, right? We have to be optimistic, sweetie! After all, we aren't as young as we used to be and it only goes downhill from here! Before you know it, we'll be dried up old spinsters with fifty cats and our only hobby will be knitting sweaters....for our cats! Oh my goodness! We're going to that speed dating thing!"
I cringed at the thought, "Fine," I replied, but only to support my best friend. Not because I think my life will only go downhill from here on end, okay?"
"You will not be disappointed, Sam! We're going to find the fathers of our children!"
"Please tell me you mean father and not father-s? I only want one father for the children I'm going to have...IF I ever have any."
"That negative attitude will get you no where. I'll meet up with you at seven?"
"I guess." I completely detested the idea that women and men were so desperate as to actually attempt trying to find their future somebody in five minutes or less.
That night, we arrived at the speed dating place just as scheduled. Coincidentally, the place was named "Love". "Great," I thought to myself. "We're searching for love at a place called "Love". How stupid is that?" That's when I looked over at Karen and realized she was totally serious about finding herself a man.
Karen was dressed in a turquoise strappy top, black jeans and heels. Her blonde hair flowing. She looked gorgeous. I on the other handwell let's just say I didn't come exactly dressed to impress.
"Sam,
