Depression is almost always associated with loneliness. That does not necessarily mean that a person is living alone. One could be among the midst of a lot of people and yet feel isolated. This could be an older person, living with children or extended family,it could be a physically dependent person, living in a nursing home, it could even be an younger person, living in a dorm. Depression, does not discriminate between gender, age , wealth or race. It attacks everyone, robbing them of their most important gift, the feeling of self worth and self esteem. So, what would be an appropriate gift for someone suffering from depression ? The gift of companionship, the gift of time, and the giving back, even to a small extent , their feeling of self esteem.
While depression always lingers latently, the holiday season brings it to surface. Everyone else seems to be having a good time, and they feel alienated from the big crowd. A thoughtful gift is one that is carefully considered, and made personal. Consider the person. What are their tastes ? Do they love music, or enjoy reading a good book ? Find out their favorites. Get them a subscription to their favorite magazine, a gift that keeps on coming through out the year !If this is someone older, who once enjoyed reading, but now suffer from weak eyesight, give them Audio tapes or CD's of books they would like. Same goes for music. They may need a tape / CD player too. Bear in mind , that if they are older, they need gadgets that are simple to operate . Do not gift them with the latest I Pod which needs a technology degree to operate! Speaking of gadgets, the simplest of cell phone, with a pre paid card may bring immense joy to someone who would just like to catch up with their friends. Go a step further and load some of their friends phone numbers in their speed dial list. You may be amazed to overhear some of their conversations, heaping praises on you. If they are movie buffs, there is an endless supply of DVD's to choose from.
Not all people are stay at home types. There are many who may have been great outdoor guys, who just don't have the physical capability anymore. Buy a couple of tickets, for a ball game , or an outdoor concert, and take them to it. It could be a couple who don't want to risk driivng at night anyomore. Just take them to a quaint resturant for dinner and later drive them around to see the Christmas lights in certain neighbor hoods. This gift of time will be much appreciated. Tickets to a dinner
