One thing any bride-to-be learns, that finding the perfect gown takes determination, an open mind and persistence! The petite bride has the added concern of finding a gown that does not make her look that much smaller. Unless you are having a gown custom made for you, know that alterations are a given with all bridal gowns. You will need a little more time to find your perfect gown, so begin your search no sooner than six months before the wedding.
A petite person is considered to be someone 5'4" or shorter. Being petite means you have a smaller figure at a shorter height. You will want to maximize your overall figure while minimizing the fact you are shorter in stature. That being said, then you should realize several gown styles will look better on you than others.
Gown Styles
Stay away from drop waist gowns. These will make you look shorter than you are. Full skirts (tulle) are a definite no for the petite bride. You will get lost in all the fluff of the skirt. If you do decide you want the fuller skirt, make sure you select a gown with box pleats. This will still give you the full skirt but won't overwhelm your short stature. Avoid long trains as this tends to make the petite bride drown in material.
The verdict is still out on Mermaid cut dresses. This is where the gown is form fitting to the knees where it then flares out, hence giving the impression of a Mermaid. You will have to try one on to see how the material and cut fits on you. Some smaller women look fabulous in this style while others look like they have been cut off at the knees.
You will want to look for gowns with long fluid lines. These will give you the impression of height. A-line/Princess Line gowns with a fitted bodice provide this long flowing look. Because the fabric in this pattern flares over hips, this also helps to disguise fuller bottoms or thicker waists on the bride.
Look for gowns that either emphasizes the top or the hem of the gown. A halter top that flows to a straight line gives the appearance the bride is taller and appears more slender. Empire waist gowns (the waistline is right under the bust line) make the bride look longer legged.
Strapless and off the shoulder gowns also give the petite bride an elongating effect. Be careful however with strapless gowns especially if your groom is much taller than you. If you have to reach up to him when dancing or when you kiss him at the end of the ceremony, the dress can shift down allowing you to fall' out. You will want to avoid any potential wardrobe malfunctions!
Veils and headpieces
As a petite bride, you will want to avoid long trailing cathedral veils as you will get lost in them. Instead stick with a shorter veil that only comes down to your shoulders. Flowers, combs or pillbox type hats are also appropriate for the smaller bride.
Where to go
Several nationwide stores carry petite size gowns. Nordstrom's has an excellent selection of styles, sizes and colors. David's Bridal, a specialty boutique chain also has a pretty good selection. You can also conduct research on line as many brides will offer their gently used gowns for sale.
Remember, no matter where you get your gown be prepared to have a number of alterations. You will want to have a perfect fit for the perfect style you have selected.
