mile-high expectations of everyone else. This is one of the pitfalls of being a politician in this country. It is never easy. Unfortunately, that is the cross one has to bring into the office whenever someone vies for a political position.
The solution to this type of problem would be patience. If Americans were willing to let things happen and support the president in pretty much anything until things get done to solve the problems we face, then an adventurous president might be able to do some of the things that take time to play out. But we're not like that. We rarely have been, and with our cell phone, microwave oven, put everything on credit to pay for tomorrow attitude, we are never going to like that. This means that all of these results to make things better need to happen within the first one hundred days of that honeymoon period, or people are going to jump ship and look for answers elsewhere, or just stop caring. And the latter problem is the real problem because a president needs support from the people in order to get what he needs accomplished. There are times when he has to go up against Congress because 435 people think they have a better idea, and sometimes he has to bring his ideas directly to the people to have them convince their representatives. A president with little popular support, like Bush has had for the latter part of his presidency, would be disastrous to a president who is trying to fix a country that is seriously broken.
This means that Obama is going to have to score 100 percent on every test. And this is a hard task to perform. My wish is that he succeeds, not because I like Obama or think he's the greatest thing since the Slinky, but because America needs to get better, and I don't really care who gets the credit for fixing her. Unfortunately, there are others who would rather let America sink than ever acknowledge someone from the "other" team fixed things. It was kind of the same when Bush was in office, even though Democrats really don't want to admit that. It is going to be that way for the next four years.
I wish him well. I hope he does what is necessary, and I sure hope that we picked the right person for the job, because it's going to be a tough job now that we have the contractor to fix the big hole in the dam.
