Why any philosophy needs a reasonable point of reference

by Melody Phillips

Created on: December 08, 2008

Any philosophy needs a reasonable point of reference for the very simple fact, philosophy is the act of deep pondering, the act of analyzing what something means on an almost spiritual level. If there is no "reasonable point of reference" than what would a person have to think about? Everything has a reasonable point of reference. If there is something out there in which no reasonable point of reference is made than it would be a discovery. However, even discoveries have a "reasonable point of reference".

Every subject in the world can be broke down to a philosophical level. Religion, love, war, and the meaning of life have been the topics of numerous philosophers. Spirituality is another area in which philosophy is abundant. If none of these subjects, emotions, and/or beliefs existed than they wouldn't be the subject of so many philosophers. These subjects have been philosophically analyzed and written about since the beginning of time. There "point of reference" is in the hearts of every individual on the planet. These are subjects we all have given thought to and want to understand.

Math, science, space, and any subject at this time I can think of have been studied by many philosophers and many up and coming philosophers. Each have there own "point of reference". Each have a beginning. Each have people who think of them in different ways. Each have a purpose that many people want to understand fully. Each of these subjects can be argued on many different levels of understanding and reasoning. This is what philosophy is. The ability to get at the heart of a subject and bring about a true meaning, and understanding for many different people.

While thinking analyzing and thinking deeply about a certain subject, while philosophically pulling a subject a part, another area of the given subject may emerge. This is how discoveries come about. I am sure Ben Franklin didn't get up one day and say I think I will fly my kite with a key tied to it in a thunderstorm. He was thinking analyzing something else and it occurred to him. Einstein didn't just say OK, E must be = to MC2, these types of discoveries come about because of philosophical thinking about any given subject.

Most philosophers spend years and years thinking about certain subjects and some philosophers just open their mouth on a subject, but if what they say has a deep meaning to many other people in the world they are considered philosophers. Any one can have a philosophical mind. I believe most people do. Just most people don't have the courage to throw there deep thoughts out in the world for everyone to see. I sometimes wonder how many discoveries have gone undiscovered because people do not dare to share their own philosophical thoughts. Philosophy has been around since the beginning of time, but a name wasn't given to this subject until a philosopher had a great thought, and put it out there for the rest of the world to see. Now the word "philosophy" is a "reasonable point of referance" on the subject of philosophy.
