Short stories: Friendship stories for children

would hardly notice a thing. She ate her oatmeal silently, and only looked up from her bowl when her mother spoke.

"Adele," her mother said, smiling at her. "That's a wonderful snowman you ended up building yesterday."

Puzzled, Adele looked at her father, who also had a similar smile. "That's right," he said, pleased. "It's impressive work, honey."

Adele didn't say anything, but proceeded to finish her breakfast as quickly as a human could. She didn't build a snowman yesterday. She had never built one. Unless she was so determined to build one the day before that she did it while she was asleep. Nevertheless, she was curious.

"I'm just going outside," Adele announced. Her parents merely nodded as they went about their own morning activities before they rushed off for work. She didn't bother with her multi-layered clothing, gloves, or scarf. She put her boots on, and ran out of the house. Her eyes moved around fast, searching.

It was there. A perfect snowman. It was just as she had envisioned; the carrot nose, button eyes, red mouth. Even the hat was there. She ran to it, feeling happier than she had in days. She looked around to see if there was anyone around, anyone who could tell her who had done such an amazing thing for her.

"You," she muttered to herself when she spotted Patrick, the rotten seed', looking handsome as he grinned at her. She couldn't believe it. She couldn't believe that someone would actually do something like this for her.

She smiled back at him. "Thank you," she mouthed at him, certain that he was the culprit that had made her so delighted.

Patrick bowed down politely as if he had just performed during a show and after a last look at her, he went back inside, looking pleased with himself.

Adele went back inside as well; eager to gear up for the cold weather, but her mind was still on her neighbour, Patrick. The anger and frustration from yesterday had long evaporated, and she knew that she had just found a friendship that would last for a long, long time.
