WINTER WEDDING THEME IDEAS

Summer is usually the chosen season for weddings, as the days boast sunshine with blue skies and balmy clear starry skies in the evening.

However, winter weddings can be gloriously glamorous and enchanting, with heaps of fluffy white snow and cosy intimate log fire reception halls.

It is a good idea to use white as the base colour, because it can be complimented with traditional "cool" colours like silver, gold or even ice blue. Other cold colours in satin or velvet work well, such as navy blue. While most ready-made gowns are designed for summer weddings, they can be complimented with wraps, capes or dramatic full length coats. White or faux fur will give any gown a wintry feel.

Christmas weddings can use the traditional reds, greens and gold so representative of the holiday, but white must be included to emphasise the event is a wedding and not just a Christmas party.

Gold or silver dresses are another option, accompanied by a tiara. The groom could, for example, dress in a white tuxedo, with a gold or silver waist coat or matching bow tie.

For the bride's bouquet fresh roses mixed together with other flowers and ribbons is always acceptable. A fur muff adds a special touch if the bride is wearing fur on her dress and/or on a cape. A lighted candle tied with ribbons adds warmth and a romantic ambience, but requires careful handling. If the budget allows, a crystal bouquet with porcelain flowers is another option.

For the ultimate elegant winter wedding silver and white is the best combination. Winter flowers to enhance this choice include white roses, lilies and baby blue eucalyptus. Reds and greens are more suitable for a Christmas feel, and a wonderful bouquet using red roses, holly and pine tree greenery will combine this important holiday period with an important day.

The complimentary colour selected can be reflected in the bridesmaids' dresses. Accessories can be in white with silver.

Very old churches can be drafty and more than likely offer little warmth. Pew markers can be simple balls in the chosen colours, tied together with ribbon. Large candles and scattered rose petals can be placed in the vicinity of alter but not too close to where the bride and groom stand. Not only will they detract from the couple, they can also affect the quality of any photographs or videos.

Wedding venues can be tricky due to the weather. Nobody wants to hold a reception in a drafty room. Make sure if there are big picture windows that the view outside
