Given today's high cost of living, the dollar doesn't go as far as it use to, and with Christmas around the corner, we're wondering how we're going to afford to put gifts under the tree. Take heart. There are ways to get everyone a gift on your list without breaking your pocketbook. All it takes is a little planning, organization, creativity and imagination.
a) Make a list of everyone you usually buy for each year including the paperboy and office worker, etc.
b) Write down their interests. One might like to bake, another likes to travel and another is into art, etc.
c) Have an idea what you want before you go into the store. When you're on a tight budget it's not a good idea to go shopping when you have no idea what you want. This could cost you more than you bargained for. Don't let the store seduce you with pretty packaging and glitzy products. It's their job to get you to buy, buy, buy.
d) Use your talent and imagination to create memorable gifts that will also save you money.
e) Shop around for best prices. Check out the Dollar Store, you'd be surprised what you can get for just a dollar. You can buy trimming for your tree, stocking stuffer, Christmas wrappings and cards, crafts etc. Wal-Mart is another great place for savings where you can buy everything from A to Z. Thrift shops are great for vintage jewelry, figurines and cookie jars. Most businesses have lowered their prices because of the economic crunch, giving the consumer greater savings.
Ten gift ideas that won't hurt your pocketbook.
1) National Geographic magazine is a gift that is sure to please. When you buy just before Christmas you save 74% off regular price. You get a year's subscription for only $15.00.

2) Dust off that sewing machine and get creative. Buy a few yards of inexpensive Christmas material with bright red and green festive prints. Sew Christmas table cloths, napkins and throw pillows, make bags, toys etc. Everyone will love the gift that was made especially for them.
3) Buy a vintage teapot from the thrift shop. Fill the pot with a variety of flavored teas; add a small package of biscuits and shortbread on the side. Wrap it all up with Christmas cellophane from the Dollar Store, tie a bright ribbon around it and voila, you have gift that is appealing to the eyes and your budget.
