Scene:
A cold Christmas Eve night. A mother and her two children watch their father unload a Christmas tree outside in the snow. They anxiously wait for the tree to be brought inside so the decorating can begin.
Characters:
Mom: Lisa (32 yrs old)
Dad: Ed (38 yrs old)
Lacey: (7 yrs old)
Clayton: (4 yrs old)
(The night is Christmas Eve and three faces watch through a frosty window as Dad unloads the family tree and prepares to bring it inside for decoration).
Lacey: "Clayton, quit hogging the window!" (Lacey pushes her younger brother aside and gets her spot in the window as they watch what's going on outside).
Lisa: "Come on now, you all behave. You've both been too good all year to mess it up now." (Lisa looks as the two of them as they watch eagerly through the window with their baggy pajamas on).
Clayton: "That's a ugly tree." (Clayton says as he looks out the window and sucks his thumb).
Lacey: "I think it's pretty." (Lacey says to Clayton as she sticks her tongue out at him. They all gather around the window and watch as Ed unties the tree from the roof of the car).
Lisa: "I knew it." (Lisa comments as she watches the tree being lifted down from the car).
Clayton: "Knew what mom?"
Lacey: "It's got a hole in the back of it; just like last year's tree mom." (Everyone starts to laugh as they huddle around the window).
Lisa: "You know your dad. He always gets one that's just a little different."
Lacey: "I think it's pretty."
Clayton: "I think it looks like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree."
Lisa: "Here he comes. Don't say anything about the hole in the tree when he gets in here with it. It's probably the best tree we could afford."
(Everyone scrambles away from the window as the front door opens; as the cold breeze brings in with it the smell of Christmas and the tree with hole in the back).
Lacey: "Wow dad, that's a beautiful tree." (Lacey says and gives her dad a proud smile).
Lisa: "It's kinds big. Do you think we'll have room for it?"
Ed: "We always do. I'm sure we can make room for it. The guy gave me a really good deal on it." (Ed says as he turns the tree around with the hole in the back).
Clayton: "It's got a..." (Lisa interrupts Clayton)
Lisa: "Maybe we can sit it over here." (Lisa says as she moves a chair over farther into the corner of the room.
Clayton: "It looks like it's crooked dad."
Ed: "Just wait till it's decorated, then it'll be the most beautiful tree in all the world." (Ed replies and smiles at Lisa; giving her a knowing look as she looks at the big hole in the back
