For His disciples, Jesus not only led the way, He is The Way. "An instrument of salvation unto the Gentiles" we are told. As Christians, we first must experience the baptism of John. Even Jesus did this.
And John baptizes with water.
In contemplating God's Holy Word, we can hardly miss the importance of the word "water".
Consider just a few pictures expressed in the words of the Bible:
God revealed to Noah the way to save his family, and covered the earth with water.
Water was the medium that God used to make a way where there was no way for the Israelites pursued by the Egyptian army, and once again delivered His people from the hands of their oppressors.
Water flows from the rock at the mouth of the Jordan River.
Water contained in stone vessels was brought to Jesus and He turned the water into wine.
When trying to walk on the water on his own, Peter sunk like a rock, but with his eyes on Jesus, it wasn't over his head.
I believe this word "water" is often used as a metaphor for symbolism, and as such, it can also be understood to represent God's plan to separate good from evil in this world.
In that Light, holy water makes sense. And its purpose truly would be to "purify".
Consider water's role at the wedding feast where Jesus called for the water kept in stone jars. If stone is a metaphor for the hard, impenetrable (and sometimes dry) literal text of the Holy Scriptures, then water could represent the symbolism contained in the literal text. It would take "exegesis" to turn the symbolism into the true Spirit of The Word (wine). Only the man fit to be King could extract the power (the sword Excalibur) from the stonebut that's another story. The water from the stone vessels was blessed by Jesus, and when He blessed it, it became wine. Jesus would later say, "This is my blood" and there's power in the blood.
He also said, "The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life." (John 6:63). And again, "Unless I go, the Spirit of Truth will not come."
So, my question to you is, "Do you think water is a significant medium to help good people get to the place God has reserved for them? Psalm 23 says, "He leads me beside the still waters." We've all heard that still waters run deep.
Of course , shallow brooks babble on. At first I saw three crosses on the water. But as they drew nearer, "I saw three ships come sailing in." Well, in light of that, water just may be the Way to the New World after all. Oh, and I understand that Excalibur now resides in the deep with the Lady of the Lake. So go ahead and wade in the water. You may find yourself totally immersed of your own volition.
But if you're not a fan of the deep, just follow Jesus, and by faith alone you can walk across as on dry land.
This is not the "bridge to nowhere" of today's world. It's the classic "bridge over troubled waters". It's The Cross of Christ.
