Poetry: Child abuse

by Lisa Parris

Created on: December 05, 2008

When she gets home from school

Her stepmother's waiting

Her soul fills with dread

Heartbeats elevating

She has a secret

A life that's unknown

Each day the Stepmother

Waits til she's alone

Then she hits the girl

With a book or a shoe

Til she cries,' til she bleeds

Until she's black an blue

They don't have much money

The bills just keep growing

And she blames the girl

Her rage overflowing

She tells her she's ugly

And stupid and fat

"This is all your fault.

You hear me, you brat?"

She no longer ducks

Or dodges or swerves

She's knows that she's gonna

"Get what she deserves"

Her Father ignores it

That's part of the game

To see anything

Means he's partly to blame.

If anyone questions

She says, "Oh my eye?

The dog knocked me over."

A well rehearsed lie.

One day she'll walk

One day she'll break free

She'll find other people

To be her family

The Stepmother will have

No more chance to attack

Leave her Father alone

With his maniac

Then who will she blame

The Father? Her Brother?

Who will bear the wrath

Of the angry Stepmother?
