Aquarium reviews: Downtown Aquarium, Denver, Colorado

When my nephew and I walked through the large glass doors of Denver's Downtown Aquarium, I realized that I was more excited than he was. Having visited the world famous aquariums at Monterey, California and Sydney, Australia, I figured that this establishment would be a makeshift operation. Imagine my surprise when I discovered an excellent exhibition of animal life in the middle of the Rocky Mountains.

The displays in the aquarium are divided into nine categories: North America, In the Desert, Under the Sea, At the Wharf, the Rainforest, Coral Lagoon, Sunken Temple, Shipwreck, and At the Beach. Each is equally fascinating for adults and children alike, although not all of them include animals. Regardless, the layout and facts posted throughout makes them interesting and easy to follow, especially for children.

Though we were not able to participate, the aquarium offers several educational, hands-on programs for children. The "Marine Biologist for a Day" program is an overnight stay where kids get up close and personal with aquatic life. They learn all about the animals and what it takes to be a marine biologist. It costs $49.95 per child and comes highly recommended by the aquarium staff. The other programs, like "Zoologist for a Day," are only for groups, schools, scout troops, and camps. (You can find all of the necessary information and rates on their website, posted below, if you are interested.)

One of the best parts of the tour is the Sting Ray Touch Tank. For adults, it is very fun to watch the fear and excitement of children reaching in to pet these creatures. Everyone can try it, and if you are worried about safety, you will be happy to know that they are harmless and friendly. The tank smells a little, but other than that it is a great experience.

The restaurant is certainly a lovely place to visit after you have worked up a healthy appetite. The menu is expansive and the food is surprisingly delicious, though it was a bit over-priced. The tables are surrounded by aquatic tanks filled with exotic fish and sharks, so the magic of the experience never ends.

As your kids run around tirelessly, you may want to stop for a drink at the Dive Bar Lounge. The dcor is surprisingly upscale and relaxing. Though I had expected it, the drinks were pretty pricey, but I discovered that they have happy hour Monday through Fridays from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. This will help cushion the blow to your wallet!

The only portion of the aquarium that I did not like was the gift shop. Sure, they have a large amount of merchandise and helpful customer service, but I do not recommend bringing a kid there: they will want to buy everything! From plush toys to sweatshirts and key chains, they have just about everything. It is a bit expensive, but I think it's worth purchasing a souvenir to commemorate your visit.

All in all, the Denver Downtown Aquarium was a surprisingly wonderful visit. It was a nice change from the Mile High City's other attractions and a great educational experience for kids.
