Winter is considered the low season when it comes to weddings. If you decide to get married during winter you can save money and take advantage of unique and romantic offerings like snow, sled drawn carriages and crackling fireplaces. A winter wedding can be a theme in itself, but if you want to take it one step further you can inject a little bit of the winter magic into nearly every aspect of the day from the music, to the venue, invitations, decoration, flowers and more.
Music
There are several songs which sing about the romance surrounding winter, you could include some of the following in your music selection:
Aretha Franklin's- Walking in a winter wonderland
Doris Day's- Let it snow, let it snow.
Michael Bolten's- This is the time
Venue
Some venues are particularly suited to a winter wedding, think old stone castles or country manors with roaring fireplaces, or perhaps a grand ballroom with an ornate chandelier which reflects the crystal crispness in the air.
Invitations
You could make your invitation a three dimensional snowflake that pops up. Or use a snowflake craft punch to create snowflake shaped confetti that you can place inside the invitations. This confetti can also be used to toss over you at the end of the ceremony.
Decoration
Decoration can really help to convey a winter theme. If it is actually snowing outside you could have snowman scenes erected. If it isn't snowing then consider having a snow machine to make snow fall down on you for great themed photos. Ice sculptures can look really glamorous and they hold up well during cold weather. Anything sparkly reflects the crispness in the air, candles add a touch of contrasting warmth and berry sprigs fit in well. At the ceremony consider having a velvet aisle runner or velvet ribbons tied to the pews or chairs.
Attire
To keep warm and complement the winter theme the bridal party would look good in touches of fur or rich fabrics like velvet or brocade. The bride and bridesmaids will need a cover up if there gowns are sleeveless. There are many options like capes, cloaks and wraps.
Food and drink
Why not have your guests met with hot chocolate and marshmallows rather then champagne. You could also have chocolate coated sultanas, cranberries nuts and sugar coated cookies for them to nibble on rather then cold canapes.
Guests will appreciate a warm, hearty main meal. Think thick soups, baked vegetables, roasted meats and warm bread rolls. Pecan Pie
