Sometimes the task of staying motivated can be harder than the goal you want to accomplish. But there are a few things you can do to stay or get back on track when all of your hard work starts to eat away at your motivation.
Have A Clear Goal
How many times have you started off on an idea that sounded like a great idea just to figure out in the process that you had no idea what you were doing? We've all done it. But the lesson to take away from this is that a clear goal is needed to make an effective plan. Preparing yourself upfront, will save you time and give you the confidence you will need to motivate yourself down the line.
Big Picture /Little Picture
Keep your eye on the ball, not the small potatoes. When you need to get something important done, there will usually be a host of smaller tasks that you need to complete before you get there. And it's easy to get hung up on those sometimes tedious, if not unpleasant details. But if you focus on those smaller tasks, while keeping in mind the big picture, that is the reason you're doing them, you will find the motivation to get through it. In short, don't sweat the small stuff. Just remember why you're doing them.
Be Flexible
There will always be snags in even some of the easiest tasks. Some of them are in your control while others will be a force of nature. Whichever the case, you must give yourself enough leeway to make mistakes and adjust to random dilemmas. If you're not able to be flexible in your plans, you'll get stuck, frustrated, and this can take quite a toll on you motivation.
Stay Positive
Beating yourself up over a problem won't fix it. You are however human, and will feel frustrated from time to time. So you should take a minute to grieve and feel your feelings. The key is not to sulk over it. It's okay to stumble as long as you get back up and push through it. Being negative about your efforts will only impede your progress and deplete your inspiration. Try taking a moment to calm down once you feel your agitation level rising. Or you could even use it to fuel your work. There is such thing a thing as good stress. You should use whichever route is best for you.
Take a Break
If you don't rest properly, you're going to work yourself into a rut or into crazy town. Take a nap, a walk, call a friend, or watch some mindless television. Just take the time to do something you enjoy for a little bit and you will come back to work with the right attitude. You'll have a lot less stress and much clearer mind, which will help you work better.
The key to staying motivated lies within you. You just have to keep your thoughts and actions in check to positively affect you and your goals. When you feel your motivation slipping away, try these steps and you'll be back in the game in no time.
