Is he a shy guy or is he just not interested?

Let's focus on how you best handled the situation. Were you laughing at his jokes, even the really corny ones? Openly flirting in a way he could easily read your intentions? How was he responding?

Very well, you say, and all the good signs were there. Now what? What is he really thinking? When dealing with any man, the key is in his smile.

A sensitive, caring individual with your best interests in mind is likely what you are looking for. Sensitive but not a pushover, caring but not obsessed, and always there when you need him. Why is this so difficult? It too often seems guys are always straight up with their friends, but hardly ever with you, except between the sheets.

The best way to tell if shy guy is not interested was seated in front of you. Think back: typical shy guy avoids eye contact, but how he avoided it is the key. Was he staring at his drink or was he shoulder surfing for the shortest skirt or the lowest cut blouse?

Shy guy may be introverted in public but quite gifted in his chosen profession, which may have enticed you to stay and chat with him. Shy guy may also be on the rebound from a breakup and may have his self-confidence around women shaken. His smile will tell you volumes about his innermost thoughts.

The smile adds significantly to your ability to read this guy. Was he smirking at you with the innocent mischievousness of a past high-school lover? Was he showing his pearly whites in a genuine laugh when you told him about a recent outing with your girlfriends? It is not only what he says to you and how he says it but how often his smile shows itself in conversation.

If there is one thing shy guy isn't shy about it's his smile. It speaks to who he truly is and where his comfort level is with you. For the time you have known him, smiles and not the dry "ha ha" are clear indications of his intentions with you.

A worthwhile pursuit will always come through with a smile. If he calls you within 48 hours, I'd grant him the exception to the '24 hour rule' and go for it. He may loosen up as you get to know him. If shy guy doesn't call he's just not that interested.
