How to care for curly hair

How many times has someone told me, "You are so lucky to have curly hair!"? Clearly they didn't see me during that awkward stage where I had no idea what to do with my uncontrollable hair that looked too poofy when it was short and too frizzy when it was long. Eventually, after using every kind of product out there, from gel to mousse to hairspray just for curls, I found the magic formula.

First, find a hairstylist who has curly hair. That person will understand the frustration you have with your hair and will understand that if you cut one inch off, it will bounce up about two inches. Plus, that stylist will also know which hairstyles you should simply avoid.

Second, when you wash your hair use a heavy conditioner. This will help control the frizzies by weighing your hair down. Frizz is a curly-haired girl's worst nightmare, so do everything you can to avoid it. This is also the best time to use a wide toothed comb on hair as well. You'll be getting any knots out of your hair while also making sure all of your hair is conditioned and healthy.

Third, when you are done washing your hair, do not rub the towel on your hair to dry it. It separates the curls and results in frizzy hair. Try wrapping it in the towel, but do not break apart those curls. If at all possible, let your hair dry as naturally as possible or use a special attachment on a hairdryer made specifically for curly hair. These usually need a low and cool setting.

As for product, some people like mousse or gel. But if used too much your hair can be crunchy and hard. Keep the amount of product to a minimum or it will look like you have a helmet on your head. There are many products made specifically for curly hair, but be sure to use them appropriately. Also keep your styling to a minimum. The more you fuss with your hair, the more likely the curls will fall apart.

Most importantly, don't play with your hair throughout the day. If you have a habit of playing with it, you will likely have a completely different hairstyle by the end of the day. It will frizz, lose its style, and you'll likely pull it into a ponytail out of frustration.

Curly hair can be a gift if you know how to style it. It just takes a lot of practice. But once you have the routine down, you'll realize it's a lot easier than straightening it and a lot prettier than all those other trendy hairstyles that go out of fashion within months.
