You've made the decision to homeschool - now what? The first thing you may worry about is what exactlyto teach. That's an easy answer.
I went onto my local state's website NCDNPE.org which is for North Carolina. That site offers suggestions from elementary to high school subjects. They even have the requirements posted for admission to NC State. I have also went on my local school district's website and they have a list of the curriculum they use. Since they must follow the state's guideline, you know you'll be teaching the right subjects.
I have also found that when it comes to subjects that aren't specified, it's easier to have your child choose something they would love to study about. For example, we did our Community Study in Kindergarten whereas public schools do it in second grade. That left a space in my planning. My daughter is interested in Egypt, mummies and pyramids so that's what we're working on. I found several excellent websites that I could download from for free and I printed a whole unit out. I spent the time making up a test and worksheets to go along with section. When she had trouble understanding something, we went to the library and picked up some books that went into more detail with pictures and easier language. She is doing well and can't wait to start social studies each day.
With Science, I break it down into two parts. The first half of the year, they get to pick what they study and the second half is spent on suggested studies. They enjoy both since they aren't forced to study about something for an entire year if it doesn't appeal to them.
I have found sites that will allow free downloads for health, music and spanish. The only expense I have is the paper and ink but what my children learn is priceless. I can take my time and alter those printouts to fit my child's needs. This is also an important fact to remember - not every child learns on the same level and so some material has to be altered.
I believe the whole concept is that the better our children enjoy school the more they'll learn. There's no sense stressing over whether you are teaching the right subjects or not. The issue is what are they learning and will it help them in the future. Sure, we have all taken classes we despised but our children have the opportunity to have fun while taking those subjects.
Just remember - use any available resource to find out what subjects you feel are necessary to teach your child. Don't let the opportunity to educate yourself slip by.
