Insurance premiums: Statistics favor women

Men may find it easier than women to find higher-paying jobs, but when it comes to car insurance, women have the clear advantage. Car insurance rates are actually cheaper for women than men. Statistics show women are lower-risk drivers than men. Apparently, women tend to obey the law a bit better than men, which result in lower premiums.

Natural Law-Abiders
Men are natural rebels. Women, on the other hand, normally prefer to obey the law. Women are less likely to speed, run stop signs or run red lights. After all, it's not exactly attractive or feminine to tangle with the law. Men tend to break the law simply to prove they can, to show that no one can tell them what to do. Women realize it's better to choose your battles, that the law is there for a reason.

Safer Drivers
Women are safer drivers than men for two reasons: they are more observant, and they are more protective. Women pay more attention to road signs and other drivers than men do. This helps them avoid accidents. Statistics have shown men are the cause of accidents more frequently than women by more than 50 percent.

Women are by nature extremely protective. Many female drivers use their vehicles to transport their children. The last thing they want to do is injure their child. This makes them more careful.

Not only are women protective of their children, they are protective of their jobs. For many women, it can be hard to land a position in a usually male-dominated field. Being absent due to an accident or loss-of-license could very well result in the loss of their hard-earned job. In order to be competitive, they must do all they can to protect their position, including being a careful driver.

Alcohol
In drunk-driving accidents, men dominate the numbers. It's common for men to stop by a bar after work or go to parties for a few drinks. Women usually head home to cook dinner, care for their family or prepare for a night out with the girls. In addition, women tend to be more careful with how much they drink and where they drink in order to stay safe. Men are usually unconcerned with the risks, which equal more male drunk drivers.

On average, female drivers can expect to pay less for premiums than men. This may change as more women choose careers and more men stay at home. For now, however, women should be happy to be a positive statistic. The next time your male friend complains about female drivers, remind him that he's actually the bad driver.
