Birthing classes are intended for women, right? If you are a father to be, you may initially lump a birthing class right in there with chick-flicks in the "for women" category. But, before you get too comfortable compartmentalizing, know that childbirth classes are for you, too!
These sessions provide a valuable information and support of parents to be. While women may naturally be more drawn to these classes, there are numerous benefits for men to attend birthing classes with their wives. A few are outlined below.
LEARN MORE ABOUT THE PREGNANCY
Since you and your spouse created this pregnancy, it's wise for you to also learn about the various stages of the pregnancy as well as what to expect during the actual birthing process. People often have fear of the unknown, so learning more about the pregnancy can reduce anxiety for you and your wife.
If you spend time in a classroom environment about birthing, you will probably think of questions you did not have before and then seek answers in a comfortable forum. If you think about it, pregnancy and subsequent child birth are miraculous things. It's cool to learn all about it.
SHOW SUPPORT TO YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER
Sometimes women feel that much of the work with a pregnancy falls on them, and it's true! One great way for you to show support to your baby mama is to engage in this activity with her. While you cannot share back pains with her, you can share the birthing class experience!
By your committing to attend these classes with your spouse, you are also showing a commitment to the baby before the little one is born. This action will speak volumes to your partner and give her more confidence in your readiness for the baby.
NETWORK WITH OTHER EXPECTING PARENTS
What a great way to meet other couples who are in the same boat with you! Support from others is hugely important during big experiences such as this one. Network with others who attend the class. Perhaps you will need to contact some of them for additional support during the pregnancy or when the baby arrives. It's a good way to make some new connections for future play dates.
GET MORE PREPARED
Through attending this class, you will be partnering with your spouse to become more prepared for the baby. Through this activity, the two of you will solidify that you are in this whole thing together. Birthing classes can serve as a catalyst for other things you need to do to get prepared such as painting the nursery.
REDUCE STRESS AND INCREASE EXCITEMENT
Having a first baby, in particular, is both hugely stressful and exciting! Attending birthing classes should help reduce your stress as you learn how to help your spouse deal with certain common issues that may arise. And, these classes are sure to increase your excitement it becomes more real to you that this really is happening.
In conclusion, if you are a father to be, do yourself a favor and go to childbirth classes with your wife. You will not regret it, and it will at the very least be a memorable experience.
