The best areas to live in Washington DC must be determined after evaluating what each individual resident requires to feel safe, happy and at home. Each of Washington DC's major neighborhoods has advantages and disadvantages. Historic areas or places close to the center of business can be priced out of many people's range. Neighborhoods with decent rental or sales prices may have issues with upkeep or criminal activity. Careful research and the advice of a well-recommended real estate agent are invaluable tools in finding the best areas to live in Washington DC.

If you're interested in being close to the vibrant night life of Washington DC, you may find yourself at home in the city's Adams Morgan neighborhood. Adams Morgan is a multi-cultural neighborhood that boasts restaurants that provide many ethnic cuisines, bars and clubs with all kinds of musical offerings, and a late night party atmosphere. Rents in Adams Morgan vary between expensive and exorbitant, though, and finding decent rental locations at an affordable price can be a challenge.

Families looking for a more sedate atmosphere may enjoy the suburban feeling nature of the Woodley Park neighborhood. Woodley Park is located west of the National Zoo, and is a more traditional subdivision. Big Box Stores like Target are located in this area, making shopping for every day necessities a bit easier on families who live in the area. Rental prices are lower in the Woodley Park area than in many of the downtown neighborhoods, which means that more space can be had at an affordable price point.

Living in the Dupont Circle area of Washington DC opens up countless opportunities for cultural and educational enhancement. Dupont Circle is a neighborhood that prides itself on it's culture diversity and acceptance of residents or visitors living alternative lifestyles. Rental prices in Dupont Circle are among the highest in the city, but the architecture and ambience make living in this neighborhood worth while if the rent is managable.

The Foggy Bottom and Georgetown Historical neighborhoods are home to some of the city's most elite and wealthy residents. This area offers gorgeous architecture, wonderful shopping and eating opportunities, and a community of residents that take pride in their homes and surroundings.

Choosing to live in Washington DC means accepting that the cost of living is high and real estate in prime areas is difficult to find. Be prepared to pay higher than average costs to rent or purchase in the DC Metro area, and then narrow in on what type of neighborhood would be the best fit for your family. Because Washington DC is such a diverse city, there is sure to be a best neighborhood for anyone who choose to move into the area.
