divisions - a voluntary part and an automatic part. When we are under stress our automatic system kicks in and releases chemicals that hyperactivate some systems while shutting off others. This is known as the fight or flight response. While this is useful in the short term occasion, such as running from lion trying to eat us, in the long term it can be harmful to the systems that are shut off. Techniques to calm the mind are necessary to maintain health. These include removing yourself from the stressor, like meditation to free the mind and proper amounts of sleep. Sleep is especially important for this is the time when the body can repair its self both physically and mentally.
In our fast paced modern life it is hard to make the time to plan a proper diet, exercise and to be alone to collect our thoughts in mediation to heal the spirit. Sleep being equally elusive, there never seems to be enough hours in the day. Then there is the constant bombardment from the advertisers for a quick fix, "just take a pill and you'll be cured and you won't need to change your lifestyle." However these are not fixes at all and often lead to more problems. This is why the disclaimers at the end of the commercials have a list of a lot more problems that you may develop if you take their product.
The body is designed to work flawlessly if we will take the time to give it what it needs, a balanced diet, aerobic exercise and relaxation though meditative thinking and sleep. In native cultures where these practices have been implemented people live long healthy lives free from disease without the use of medication.
