Are cough medicines necessary?

Are cough medicine necessary? No. Are they helpful? Yes, cough medicine can relive excessive coughing and help eliminate phlegm, which will make us feel better. Feeling better accelerates the healing processes because it gives us a beneficial mental attitude. However prevention can eliminate the need for medications of any kind.

The human body has an incredible ability to heal its self when maintained properly. Most all of our ills and need for medications can be eliminated if the three areas of human health which are physical, mental and spiritual are cared for and balanced. Daily attention to diet, exercise and proper thinking is all that is needed.

Humans are designed with an immune system that protects us from disease and repairs us when we are damaged. We need to maintain this system with the proper supplies it needs. Just like an army cannot win a war when its supply line is cut off, so goes our immune system. It is our body's army in the war of disease. The way we supply it is through our diet. The old adage "you are what you eat" is exactly true. What you put in to your system are the materials which you are built with. If you built a house with cardboard it would not last in a storm. It is the same with the body - if you build it with Twinkies you will have a soft spongy body and it will not last when faced with adverse conditions. Given the proper balance of 60% carbohydrates, 20% proteins, 20% fats along with the correct amounts of vitamins, minerals and water, the immune system should run trouble free for a life time. This is provided there are no genetic abnormalities to prevent it form doing so.

In order to get the nutrients where they belong exercise is necessary. A person must get his respirations and heart rate up. This is known as aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise is needed in order to circulate the nutrients to all the cells of the body. Like the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz we need to move or we will rust solid, figuratively of course. The lymphatic system, the system of immunity, has its own vascular network, but has no pump. The only way to get the immune cells around the body is by body movement. Sitting too much will allow us to get sick because our soldiers are not being transported to the battle.

Along with the immune system, the nervous system has a lot to do with our health. Proper thinking is crucial to good health. If we are constantly under stress and worry, certain parts of the body will start to fail. The nervous system has two
