Make Your Own Prom Dress

If you like to sew and have an eye for style you can save a lot by making your own prom dress. You can also be the best-dressed at the Prom.

First decide on what type of prom dress you would like depending on the styles that are popular. Also decide on the fabric and color. Look through fashion magazines for popular styles such as Glamour, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Teen, etc.

You will also need to take measurements to determine your size. Take a tape measure and measure for bust, waist, and hip widths. Measure underneath your bust for bust size. The hips are measured approximately 9 inches below the waist or at the widest part below the waist.

Once you have decided on style and fabric; and have taken your measurements, you can go to your favorite fabric store or fabric section of the a department store to select your pattern, fabric, and notions. Make sure to get the closest size to your measurements. You can adjust later when cutting and sewing your pattern. Also check on the pattern to see how much fabric you will need, according to your size and measurements. It is a good idea to buy a little extra fabric to allow for mistakes or perhaps a matching scarf or jacket.

The most popular patterns are made by Simplicity and Butterick. Look for prom dress or gown patterns in your pattern book and make a choice. Try to find something close to what you liked while going through the fashion magazines. Then select your fabric.

Once you have selected your pattern and fabric, you will need to choose matching thread, lace, ribbons, zipper, and whatever you need to complete your sewing project. Make sure you have a good scissors, a good supply of hand sewing needles, sewing machine needles, and pins.

Make sure to give yourself enough time before the prom to make your prom dress.

If you are into design and drafting, you may want to design and draft your own pattern for your prom dress. You can do this by buying a pattern close to what your design will look like and then adjusting the pattern. Or if you have the skills you can completely design it yourself.

Your prom date is at the door with a beautiful corsage and you are dressed in your creative and fashionable best having created and designed your own prom dress. You already feel like the princess of the prom.
