Poetry: Society

You set your eyes on the money and the fame
You are not the first
It's all part of the game
It's the unattainable goal that we set
It's a dream that we would rather not forget.

It's an American story
The story of you
It's an American story
The story of me
It's the way things are
And there is nothing we can do
It's an American story
It's the way things will be.

It's funny
Ain't it?
How we fool ourselves
We believe the lies
And keep our hearts on the shelves
We live forever
But we die alone
We finally realize
This dream ain't our own.

You find true love
And it breaks your heart
You've been destined to fail
From the very start
So you spend your nights alone
You are battered and worn
You've done nothing but fail
Since the day you were born.

It's an American story
The story of you
It's an American story
The story of me
It's the way things are
And there is nothing we can do
It's an American story
It's the way things will be.
