Make your own prom dress

Make your own prom dress and have something unique that fits any budget. A home made prom dress can be just as beautiful but far cheaper than an off the shelf store bought one. It can be confusing to know where to start. A few helpful hints can help.

Look at other prom dresses. Stores, eBay, catalogs, any where there are fancy dresses that you might like. This can be a good starting point, narrowing down difficult choices between color, style, and decorations. Shop around for ideas and see how different material behaves in folds and skirts and sleeves. Sewing stretchy, fragile material is far harder than simple cotton or velvet.

Be realistic. A heavily sequined dress might be eye catching, but not very practical for a hand sewn dress, or cheap. A light touch of ribbon or ruffle and lace might be easier and more affordable. If a pattern calls for ten yards, buy ten yards of material. You can't sew your own dress by cutting corners at wrong places. Besides, you might want to dances in your dress. Despite how small it makes your waist you want to be comfortable and have fun, something a store bought dress might not offer.

Consider a simple style, one that complements your figure. A lovely dress is something you can wear later at engagement parties, or weddings, or a ladies night out. A really complicated dress is not only hard, but has a higher chance of looking poor, and a modern fad dress might be an embarrassment years later.

Be creative. Try different styles and personal touches using pins before you sew, so you can change things around easier. Using different colored thread can add pretty highlights. An extra long necklace can be used as a belt, or cut for a embellishment on the neckline, or wrist.

Be sure to finish in time to wear it before the big date. Nothing is more embarrassing than finding out the dress you bragged about ripped at the seams after ten minutes, or slides down too far at inopportune moments.

Leftover pieces can be used for shoes, earrings or a hair piece. Even if you don't feel that creative, don't forget to accessorize. A small purse can add a hint of feminine maturity and make it easier to keep track of tickets and money.

You can make your own prom dress. It takes practice and patience, bu the results can be worth it.
