Horse breed facts: Arabian Horse

The Arabian horse, also known as the "Desert Horse" originated from the Arabian Peninsula; located in the Middle East. This breed was passed down by the Bedouin people at least 2000 years before the Christian era. Back then, this type of breed was used in a variety of Arabian type competitions including racing. This breed of horse was also used in war. The Arabian horse still remains today as the purest of all breeds and is considered a "Hot Blooded" horse. The particular type of breed is noted for its spirited natured temperament and is usually full of energy. They can become quite excessively nervous and anxious at times. The Arabian breed is the foundation of all racehorses including the Thoroughbred, the Quarter Horse and the Standardbred. Though the speed of the Arabian horse isn't as fast as typical racehorse breeds; its longevity of traveled distance played a big part in being their descent.

The characteristics of the Arabian horse breed is recognized by its unique skeletal frame and its proudly held high tail. The Arabian breed only comes in solid colors with standing height at over 14 hands high. Arabian horses possess a short head with distinctive muscular features. Its neck is short and slender with pronounced muscle within the sloped shoulders. It carries a broad yet slender back. The eyes are found to be large and spaced far apart. The Arabian conformation was built for endurance and speed. Despite the size of this horse, it is very strong. While having thin, textured, smooth, fine, silky hair, the tail rarely needs trimming. The hooves are found to be nicely formed, extremely thick and near complete resistant to any type of foot disease.

This beautiful breed has become very famous and popular in the United States of America. The Arabian breed today is used for show, under the saddle, different types of competitions and has become a well known star in the movie production world. Movies like Black Beauty, The Black Stallion, and Hidalgo are just a few to name, that this extraordinary breed has been used in. This beautiful creature is a pleasure to just watch and possesses a great deal of Islamic history within its own breed. They are known to be quick learners and people pleasers. This breed is also noted for their long lasting endurance. Currently there are over 300,000 Arabian horses residing in the United States and is considered to be one of the top ten breeds within our country.
