Poetry: Lost souls

THE CHANGE

I can see the empty bottle tipped over on the stairs
Pills littering the floor and there's no sound since you're not there
The silent disarray of a deeply shattered life came boiling to the surface in one explosive night
Little did you know right than just what you stood to lose
Your battles aren't all worth the fight, you need to pick and choose
People never help you out because you never let them in
And you left one violent cycle just to let one more begin
You felt like you were drowning and now I'm drowning too
Because a change occurred in me that night there's no way to undo
I wake up from my sleep at night, afraid to get that call
Telling me you tried again, but no one came this time at all
Now nothing new has happened and yours problems aren't solved
It's more than I can take and I don't want to get involved
If I turn my back on you I know you'll feel betrayed
But if the pain keeps adding up like this, I'm not sure I can stay
So the next time you come calling, I might come rushing out to help

Or maybe next time you start drowning, you might just have to save yourself
