How to change cultures within business

by Michelle Powers

Created on: December 01, 2008

Organizational and corporate culture consists of the following components; culture where there are shared actions, values, and beliefs that have developed within the organization, corporate, or firm. These components guide the members within the groups. A firm is a group of people who are grouped together for economic gain.

A firm's culture is very important! A firm's culture will dictate whether or not the firm is economically successful. The employees of a firm need to feel good about the firm's policies, rules, regulations and ethics. If an employee feels she/he or a co-worker has been mistreated, that can cause tension which can lower production.

Employees need to have opportunities to advance otherwise they will feel 'stuck' which can lead to negative feelings, lack of self-esteem, and a lack of empowerment. When employees have negative perceptions of themselves and their job it affects the employee's productivity. The firm needs to make a profit so keeping employees empowered and challenged is a key to success.

The firm's culture requires a leader who knows how to problem solve and be a good leader. If a manager does not have the tools to problem solve or be a leader that can cause confusion, frustration, anger, resentment, and result in failure. A firm needs a manager who can foster an environment that will result in productivity.

A firm's culture can foster an environment that is productive or one that is set up for failure. A firm's culture is a key to whether or not a group of people will be successful!

Technology is a trend that has affected organizational behavior on a very large and diverse scale. Email allows instant communication with employees, other organizations, and with each other. The internet allows organizations to do everything from have conferences across the world, to banking online, and even shop for supplies. Technology has allowed organizations to do a lot right from the comfort of their desk, all with a click of the mouse... Technology is advancing every day and will continue to do so. There are robots now that do basic housekeeping tasks to telephones that allow access to the internet. As technology advances communication will change.

A more relaxed work environment is a trend that is changing organizational behavior. More and more companies, such as Google, have employee lounges, allow pets to be brought to work, relaxed dress code, more flexible hours, and even some companies provide benefits like pet insurance. Going to work use to mean dress pants and a nice top, no sneakers or flip-flops, work between the hours of 8-5, and pets were not even discussed. This trend is occurring because as companies relax the setting the employees are becoming more productive. A happy employee means more productivity. Companies can compete with each other to attract employees by providing these relaxed work environments as incentives.
