Online writing jobs: What's the truth behind the hype?

by Ruth Belena

The truth about online writing jobs is that not all paid writing opportunities are what they seem. The hype about how easy it is to make money writing for the internet is misleading, and some caution is necessary when seeking online writing jobs.

* Pay to Join Writing Sites:

It is not a good idea to pay a monthly subscription to a writing site that insists anyone can make money by joining, without doing a little research and checking whether you need to pay upfront before starting to earn money as a writer.

Some sites offer to help writers find employment and earn money online and charge for the information. These sites provide links to writing resources, and recommend the best sites for finding writing jobs. This is information that is freely available to anyone using a search engine.

* Writing Job Offers:

An unsolicited email, a forum post, or a free ad, may appear to be a real job, offering payment to writers who can provide short pieces for websites and blogs. It may seem to come from a business looking for a series of articles for submitting to article directories and e-zines, but the writer is expected to submit their work to someone whose only contact is an email address. If it is a scam, the writer may never receive payment for their work.

It may be tempting to accept these offers, but a writer can too easily sign away rights to their work. A ghostwritten article belongs to the purchaser once the transaction has been completed. If articles are purchased and then sold on as original work, under a different name, the real writer will only receive a small amount, and will get no recognition for their work, while the purchaser makes a profit.

* Legitimate Online Writing Jobs:

Submitting work at a reputable writing site is by far the safest way for a writer to earn money online. Helium is the best writing site to start a career as a web writer.

In the Helium Marketplace publishers set out guidelines for assignments, and offer a reasonable rate for each article they decide to purchase. Publishers pay Helium for articles they choose to accept, and writers get payments added to their earnings. It is completely free to register and submit to Helium, and writers have the opportunity of earning in several different ways.

There are also job sites that can help freelancers find work in technical writing, web content writing, business report writing, blogging, article writing, copywriting, editing and translation work. Some of these sites require a membership fee to be paid, and there is no guarantee of work being found.

Freelance writers need to be competitive and bid for jobs,and are required to submit a portfolio of their work. When an application is accepted, the freelancer is contracted to undertake the writing job. Payment is made on completion.

There are genuine opportunities to make money with online writing jobs, if you search carefully. Just be sure to learn about various ways to make money writing online, and know what is involved, before you accept an writing job.
