Reflections on real life heroes
My Hero isn't a super human, he doesn't have super powers or you couldn't even pick him out of a crowded room. I have one but with my hero there comes other like him. And I respect and adore them all. But my hero grew up in the country. He didn't have much but what he did have he cherished. He had two brother that were younger than him and he had an ill mother. He took care of his mother when she was having a bad bout & he would watch his brothers and he made sure they where cared for. As he grew up he worked hard to make things easier for everyone. His father was a healthy man up until he went to war in this was the first world war.
But once his father came home from the war everyone notice his father wasn't the same man. His father had a plate put in his head. Then one day his father became to ill for them to care for. And he was sent away to a special hospital for war vets. His father never came out of this hospital. To go see his father it would of been 14 hour drive and they didn't have transportation. So he didn't see his father until his late twenties.
He grew up and realize that there was a another war coming and his country needed him. So he followed in his father shoes and enlisted in the second world war at the age of 18 years old. . He fought for his country proudly. But while fighting for his and our freedom he saw things that no one should ever see or have to endure. He lost his best friend to a grenade right in front of him. He had to do things that he didn't believe in but those were his orders and he followed them. He still held his head up high and got the job done.
Then when the war was over he meet and married a beautiful woman and had 5 children. He had two girls and three boys. He work very hard to make sure his children didn't have to live the life he did. A times he work three jobs so his family had what they needed. Then his children had children and that's where I came into this story. I was the first born in our family and the first grandchild my hero had.
As you probably know by now my hero is my grandfather. From the first time I saw my grandfather I loved him and knew he would always be a hero to me. But when I grew older and understand what my grandfather has done for our country I realize he just wasn't my sweet gentle grandfather but he was a war vet, the truest of heroes! This made me even prouder of the man who was larger than life to me. But I also realized that most heroes don't love you back, but my hero does.
That's what makes him even more special to me. So if you see a war vet please say thank you to them. They deserve so much more than we give them. Thank you.
