Short stories: Horses

"I told you about what happened to Mrs. Spencer."

"I know, but it won't happen to me, " I said quietly. I knew he would tell me the story over again and I dreaded it. I just wanted to ride. "Dad, please."

"No, I can't and won't allow it," he replied. "She was kicked. Kicked in the head. She was a wonderful rider. She loved her horses, but her life will never be the same. She walks with a limp and her speech is slurred. Her life will never be the same."

"You already said that. You repeated yourself," I replied.

"I'm just concerned." He pulled me into a tight bear hug and continued, "I just don't want the same thing to happen to you. You're only thirteen."

"It won't. I promise, " I half-squealed and half-yelled. I wanted to ride so badly. It felt like being around horses was what I was born to do, I just didn't know how to convince my father.

"That's not a promise you can keep." He picked up his tools and glanced over his shoulder as he walked out of the room. The conversation was over.

The goats were a favorite of ours, so we headed to see them first. We peeked into each stall and greeted each of our friends. The nannies, bucks, and kids all made quite a racket the moment they saw us because they thought we had brought food for them. The large male goat pushed the others out of the way and rammed the gate, forcing us to jump back. We giggled but it was a nervous giggle. I made a mental note not to ever get in his way when he was in the pasture, as his hard horns would surely be painful on impact. I had heard stories of riders at the farm being rammed by him many times.

The goats were making alot much noise but we heard something even louder, that neither of us recognized.

"Do you hear that?" she whispered." "What do you suppose it is?"

"A bull having sex?" I replied trying to be funny. I didn't know what a bull having sex sounded like, and for that matter I didn't have a clue if sex even sounded like something at all. "I don't know, but it
