Poetry: Christmas shopping

by Cecilia Diaz

Created on: November 29, 2008

I went to the mall early today.

With so many people in my way

I zigged to the left

And zagged to the right

Barely missing a woman in flight.

In all of her haste down the aisles

Past sweaters and jeans in nice piles

She saw the sales rack

from fifty yards back

And raced to her prize with no smiles.

Her concentration was as fierce as a lion

To get to the thing she was buyin'.

In midair she plunged

As another one lunged

To get to the same purple tie-on.

I don't understand their obsession

With an item whose worth was uncertain

They wrestled and pinned

But neither gave in

They held tight to the object in question.

Finally, with a great big jerk of her hand

The first woman, triumphant and grand,

Stood over the other

With no thought for her mother

And held up the prized purple band.

So next Christmas I think I will shop

From my cozy own home til I drop

Avoiding the crowds

And competitive brows

When I spend all my money, I'll stop.
