How to determine if engineering is for you

is one of the most strategic fields today because computers control everything today and it can surely offer good job opportunities to a young engineer. So, you need to be very skilful in PC use and ready, not only to perfectly use programs, but also to create them, as required to informatics engineers.

In addition, an excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken) is surely a must, at the university and at work, if you are not mother-language in English.

Engineering is not a simple technical discipline because Sciences are fundamental, at the base of every technological creation. For example, the scientific discoveries on semi-conductors, on super-conductors and, more recently, on nanotechnologies have been partially employed to create the electronic devices we know today (from the radio-stereo to the PC and the I-POD) thanks to the engineers working together with researchers in the fields of Solid State Physical Chemistry, Metals Sciences, Physics and similar.

Science is at the service of technology and an engineer must have a good scientific culture in Physics, Chemistry, Optics, Astronomy, Earth Sciences (the last, is important in mining activities and for ships and airplanes projecting that must be built being highly resistant to winds, sea currents and extreme meteorological conditions and also be able to exploit them in the most efficient way).

- Personal attitudes -

Engineering is a hard path to follow and you must be able to study with patience, constancy and good attitude to problem-solving. At the university, exams are always particularly severe and selective, as some friends of mine, eventually become engineers, have always told me; hence, only the best students can achieve the degree.

Another important skill you must find in yourself is the attitude to work in a team with other engineers, technicians and experts in disciplines frequently very different from yours. Be able to clearly explain your ideas but also to listen and understand those of the others, always remembering that also engineers must never finish to learn something from their work and life around them.
