Digging the lawn for your dog is like for a child going to school. It is the essential part of learning through play but costly and distractive that's for sure. And although he is the part of the family, the dog shouldn't be allowed to roam on your lawn as it pleases because you are risking turning your lovely green grass into the trenches!
The digging can come from boredom too. If the dog doesn't get enough exercise it will keep itself amused somehow.
There were numerous tactics that we have tried and failed to teach our dog in order to stop the digging. The words, clapping, rattling all these devices that would work on the human didn't even make our dog's ear twitch. The minute he saw his newly dug out hole on the lawn filling up with rain water the party was on!
The best thing that worked for our dog and us was to make him his own quarters divided by the fence. The part of the house were the dog stays leads outside and straight into his garden part. The grass has been completely removed and the sand has been laid to give the base for the concrete. It has been covered with concrete slabs and partially beach cobbles. The effect of the beach has been achieved by adding kids' old paddling pool. The dog can enjoy the outdoors without the additional cost for us.
We have been saved from the mud and dirt and ruined lawn.He can still enjoy the garden and play at his heart's content.
