Philadelphia is a great sports town with passionate and educated fans. They are typically known as "boo birds" but in all honesty, Jimmy Rollins was correct when he called us front runners. We will always show up to games but if the team looks bad, we do let them know. Like Rollins was quick to say, it is like family love. And the fans in Philadelphia are a family who cry and celebrate together. Players, who have done well here, love and revere this city. Take Cole Hamels; somehow I've spent $100 on beer for him. The teams themselves provide us with a source of great passion each year and we are represented by a team from each of the four major sports leagues, MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL. All the teams play in South Philly in the Sports Complex on Broad Street. I'll give you a brief rundown for each of the city's teams.
Philadelphia Phillies (Major League Baseball - National League - East Division)
Manager: Charlie Manuel
Marquee Players: Chase Utley (2B), Ryan Howard (1B), Cole Hamels (LHP), Jimmy Rollins (SS)
Last Championship: 2008
Stadium: Citizen's Bank Park
Rival: New York Mets, Washington Nationals
Announcers: Harry Kalas, Chris Wheeler
The Phillies are the heart of Philadelphia. They are the oldest continuous one city-one name team in all of professional sports. The Phillies were created in 1876 and have enjoyed only minor success. Their first world championship was in 1980 and they recently won their second last October. They also became the first team in pro sports to have 10,000 loses, partly because they are the oldest and partly because of many years of failure. Recently the Phillies have begun to rebound, having chased down the Mets in a dramatic finish last season to win their first NL East since 1993 and winning the aforementioned World Series. In 2005 Ryan Howard won the Rookie of the Year, and in 2006 won the Most Valuable Player. Rollins won the MVP in 2007. The announcers for the Phillies are some of the best in the business. Harry the K is in the NFL and MLB Hall of Fame and Chris Wheeler (Wheels) has been outstanding for many years. Larry Anderson (L A) provides very colorful commentary for every game. The 1993 season is often considered one of the most magical stories in Phillies history, going from worst to first and coming within two games of winning a World Series. For a great documentary on that season see High Hopes: The Anatomy of a Winner.
Philadelphia Eagles (National Football League - National Football Conference - East Division)
