Kuuipo, The Limbo Cat
Kuuipo (Coo-E-po) grew anxious. It is a wellknown fact that cats don't have much patience, and Kuuipo was no exception. Muttering to herself in soft but distinctly aloof mews, she twisted against the doorframe to the woman's bedroom, as if that might hurry her to sleep. Didn't she understand, it was nearly midnight and the guests would be arriving?
"Humph, " thought Kuuipo, stroking her side with her tongue, ferreting out some nuisance in her fur. Just like the lady to be in the way, acting like she owned the place. Kuuipo made a decision, and padded downstairs to start the party. The woman spent her life talking to a piece of plastic that sometimes made a ringing sound just before the woman talked to it; some ritual it seemed. At least after a while, sometimes, it seemed to put her to sleep. It was a risk to start a party now, but not much of one, and Kuuipo had no fear. After all, she was a cat!
Black and White Paws was the first to arrive, bringing a bit of catnip, hardly enough to share, but enough to get her quite rowdy. Hmmm, it's always the rowdy ones who arrive early and stay late. Sometimes, as you can see, Kuuipo could be quite stuckup. She said she got that from the residents. Who knew what she meant by that!
Guests arrived in spurts, one here, two from behind the house, a couple she never met, and soon the party brimmed with felines of all kinds.
Kuuipo played hostess to the largest and wildest and funniest and noisiest, and most challenging of all the limbo parties on the island of Maui, her home. Known far and wide, at least in certain, specific circles Kuuipo had won her reputation in backyards, behind buildings, across streets, and near beaches (not, of course near the water). She won fair and square and became The Limbo Queen of Island Cats, and she flaunted her skills with the regality deserving her title, the Queen of all Limbo Cats.
Many an evening she'd demonstrate her skill. Tonight, perhaps, too, but first the party animals needed their refreshments. Don Ho sang on the stereo, two calicos taught a third to twostep; no mean feat to Don Ho music. Alicia and Bronx took turns licking each other with unsophisticated banter between licks. Bronx liked boxing, and often would pick a fight just for fun. Kuuipo kept the catnip away from him always.
More cats arrived, Rax, Uhulu, Spock and Banner. In the kitchen Matilda and Oahu had a mouse they brought from home, and they shared it playfully, too playfully thought Kuuipo as the mouse
