Whether you own a poodle or a parrot, whether you're an expert or a first-time pet owner, there's always something new to learn and experiences to share - and the Internet is a great place to do both. However, the problem with the Internet is finding what you need and knowing that what you do find is reliable.
As I research and write on animal related questions and issues, I rely on a number of web sites for information - and for a bit of fun and relaxation too. The following sites are my top recommendations if you're looking a pet-related information on the Internet:
1. www.HSUS.org (Humane Society )
If you bookmark only one pet-related website, make it the Humane Society site. Although the home page concentrates on animal welfare, issues and donations, there's also information on traditional and non-traditional pets, wildlife and farm animals. There's a great search facility which returns well-written articles on everything and anything animal-related, from selecting the right animal for you to coping with pet-loss.
2. www.AnimalNetwork.com/PetChannel.html
Most people think of cats and dogs when they think of pets, but snakes, ferrets, horses, fish and rabbits are pets too. The PetChannel site is is a "master site" with links to seven different "sub-sites" dedicated to dogs, cats, horses, fish, reptiles, birds and small animals (rabbits, ferrets, hamsters to name a few).
Each "critter"Channel website has articles on health, behavior, breeds, shopping, toys - everything you need to know about your favorite animal. Each site also has a forum for fanciers, to get advice, share advice and make friends with people who are as crazy about your favorite species as you are.
3. www.DogBreedInfo.com
There are many different types of pets, but dogs are arguably the most popular. Finding the "right" breed and the right dog is one of the best ways to insure a long, happy relationship with your dog. DogBreedInfo has an entry for every official breed, hybrids and the "renegade" breeds too. Each entry includes loads of pictures and and information on the breed's look, history, grooming needs, temperament and health issues, as well as links to breeders and breed rescue groups.
DogBreedInfo has been criticized for helping to fuel the canine over-population epidemic, but the site provides strong, balanced arguments on the issues - and on solving the problem. DogBreedInfo actively discourages casual, backyard and in-it-for-the-money breeders, while supporting conscientious breeders.
