Does materialism mean the death of spirituality?

by Judy Merrill

Created on: November 27, 2008

As human beings we are body, mind, spirit energies, each aspect vibrating with the energy of its own manifestation. Consider the body the material of our earth world. We use it to function, grow, prosper, etc.

Consider the spirit within this body vibrating at the finer level of spirit existence. It is the eternal part that transitions when the material body dies. From dust to dust is about the deteriorating nature of material energies.

The mind governing all has another vibration within the whole aspect. The mind focuses our energies to a material outcome of all our experiences. Or it focuses for a spiritual outcome of our experiences. The two seldom work together to produce an outcome of growth within the spirit.

When we focus all our attention to our material lives, we will do anything to prosper. We become self absorbed and lose any semblance of the finer qualities within the spirit. Materialism is a gross vibration that is evident in all that we do on the earth plane. The spirit within is not quite so evident except in how we use our material energies to produce a spiritual result.

Spirituality is the growth and prosperity of the spirit energies. How we accomplish in all those material vibrations on earth is a measure of our own abilities at spirituality. Each and every experience that enters our lives can be handled from a material energy level or the spirit level. This is the place that the mind can be focused through practice, on either material outcomes or spiritual outcomes on all our experiences.

We have the optimum choice of a mind set to growth of the individual being. And if the mind is set on spirituality rather than the material gain, then the focus will be on the spirituality of the soul.

Materialism and Spirituality do not live well together. Materialism on the gross energy level gives us experiences that offer us the fruits of our labours in a material world. The soul in our material pursuits is left bereft of spirituality and bereft of any inner qualities of our finer vibration. They have been squashed in the rush for material gain.

Without the inner qualities in place, materialism focuses on 'win at all costs' and that all other people are our opponents to be overcome in this game of life. Spiritual qualities are seen in this as being weak and unimportant to us as individuals.

But it is the spiritual qualities that are eternal. The spirit containing all the lessons of spirituality has enhanced the soul and moves on in its journey of eternal progress. That progress is based on our spiritual nature. Even as we live in the material world it is important to our ultimate spirituality to learn to grow from spirituality.

Material will fade and die. Spirit will continue for eternity.
