The greatest upsets in college football history

Appalachian State 34 #5 Michigan 32 (2007)

The Mountaineers came to Ann Arbor with every expectation of competing with Michigan, even though no FCS team had ever beaten a ranked FBS team. Michigan had other plans as it took its first possession right now the field and scored. Appalachian State responded with a 68-yard Armanti Edwards to Dexter Jackson touchdown. Michigan would take the lead again but in the second quarter it was all Mountaineers. Appalachian State put up 21 points and held Michigan to only a field goal to have a shocking 28-17 lead. Michigan roared back to take a 32-31 lead with 1:37 left on the clock but Julian Rauch hit a 24-yard field goal. Michigan came back again, with Chad Henne connecting to Mario Manningham for a 46 yard completion for set up Jason Gingel for a 43 yard field goal. Corey Lynch then stunned America by blocking the attempt and running the ball to the Michigan 5 as time expired.

This upset is number 1 on most lists, and I won't deny that it should be. I put it number 10 because the significance of the game was lost following Michigan's woefully 2007 and 2008 campaigns. At the time of the game though it was the most improbable and unbelievable game ever. Even watching Lynch run the ball back I was still sure Michigan would find a way to win the game. These games against FCS schools are usually a tune up game for FBS programs. The Mountaineers went on to win the FCS title while Michigan upset Florida in the Capitol One Bowl finishing 9-4

Stanford 24 #1 USC 23 (2007)

The powerful USC offence struggled to move the ball against Stanford's defense all day. Stanford held USC to just 6 points in the first two quarters and enter halftime with thoughts of an upset, though they hadn't managed to score themselves. Stanford picked up 7 points in the third but USC kept pace. Down 23-17 in the fourth quarter, Stanford started the Miracle Drive. Tavita Pritchard started his first game for the Cardinal due to T.C. Ostrander suffering a seizure the week before. Pritchard took the ball on USC's 45 after Wopamo Osaisai intercepted John David Booty's pass with 2:50 to go. A pass interference call on safety Kevin Ellison moved the ball to the 20. On fourth and twenty Pritchard connected with Richard Sherman for a twenty yard pass to move the ball to the 9. On 4th and goal from the USC 10 Pritchard hit Mark Bradford. Pritchard later told reporters that he could not hear coach Jim Harbaugh's play call, so he called one himself.
