Short stories: Vacation experiences

down to wake his pet and best friend of many years Miikka, He was a Finnish Spitz, with a glorious red/gold coat and a loveable appearance. Miikka obliged with a yawn and followed David into the kitchen where the he carefully set the note down on the traditional oak wood dining table; it sat atop a pile of post, which he'd collected for his family whist they were in Scotland

visiting relatives. He had declined the offer to join them as he saw it as the perfect chance to leave. David then went to the back door to get his keys, Miikka duteously followed; David spoke quietly to his dog and sure as ever he did what was asked of him.

"Stay here boy"

David then went into the study where the farms office was and opened a large fitted cupboard, he took out a brown leather bag and placed it across the table, David then opened another door to reveal a large grey steel cabinet, with a large sliver handle and a small hole in its centre, one of the keys he had slipped effortlessly into the hole and he turned it with some resistance and then turned the handle with a clunk, David pulled open the door and removed his shotgun from the cabinet along with a box of cartridges. He slid the gun into the bag on the table and the cartridges into one of the deep pockets in his wax jacket. He then closed everything up again and left the room.

He put on his shooting hat with the pheasant feather sticking out of it, and opened the old wooden door and walked into the farm yard, which promptly became illuminated by the security lights; he strolled leisurely across the concrete yard, stepping softly as if to avoid drawing attention to himself. After a solemn walk he reached the old stone garage where his trusty landy was parked, the door opened, and he walked into the dark space and over to the ageing defender 110 in the corner and climbed in, he didn't ever lock it when it was left here, he just couldn't see the point, it wasn't worth stealing. He started it with a roar and drove slowly out of the garage and back over to the farmhouse, stopping out side the back door, he got out and picked up the two cases from inside the house and placed them in the back of the vehicle. He did the same with his shotgun, but not with Miikka, who instead got to sit in the front with a large chew toy to keep him happy. The last thing David did was to lock the house and garage before he got back into the landy and left his home of many years for good, he caught a fleeting glance of the house in the wing mirror
