Poetry: Thanksgiving

A Day of Thanksgiving and Remembrance

The bird is in the oven,
the pies are set to bake;
the Children all excited ask:
"Daddy how long will it take?"

The guests are all arriving
from places far and near;
longing for warmth and companionship
which comes this time of year.

The leaves they all have fallen,
their season come and gone;
the days are brief and chilly now,
we hope for a winter not too long.

Around the table present,
are the faces we adore;
but a chair there still sits empty,
a loved one lost to war.

And on this day of Thanksgiving,
our blessings we explore;
and on this day of remembrance,
we grieve those here no more.

So bring the feast to the table
and let the meal begin;
now fill the room with laughter,
just us, our friends, and kin.

And say a prayer of thankfulness,
let joy in hearts abound;
and hope for many days like this,
in future years compound.

Happy Thanksgiving!
